Short Shivers Newsletter #3
Model Boss, Scaredy-Cat Reviews and a little about my upcoming short story
What a Week it’s Been!
Okay, it’s actually been three weeks since my last newsletter, but who’s counting? Don’t worry, I haven’t been sitting around doing nothing. Quite the opposite!
Model Boss
Last Friday, I dropped my latest short story, Model Boss, a dark comedy that’s been getting some laughs (and hopefully for the right reasons). It’s my first attempt at writing something funny, though I’m a hoot in real life (just ask my friends).
Balancing the dark and the humorous was tricky. The story follows Grace and Tiffany, who are doing their best to dispose of a body without getting caught. Spoiler: they’re not exactly pros at this. The humour comes from watching them bumble through their "clean-up," since their options for hiding a body are, shall we say, limited. Add in an office setting and a cast of quirky characters, and you’ve got a fun, chaotic ride.
Plus, it was a nice break from my usual doom-and-gloom style. Who knew murder could be so... refreshing?
Scaredy-Cat Reviews
In a bold move, I put on my big - boy pants this week and watched Insidious. I’m happy to report that I survived the scares — and even wrote a review afterward.
Now, I’m no film critic, but I had a blast writing about it. So much so, that I’ve lined up another review for next week: The Omen (the 1976 version, of course). If you’ve got any horror recommendations that won’t keep me up at night, drop them in the comments!
My Next Short Story
It’s still early days on this one, but here’s a sneak peek: the next story will be set in 1990 and follow two cops in a tiny, remote, gothic town where — surprise, surprise — spooky supernatural stuff happens. I’m planning for it to be a three - or four - part series, and if people like it, I might make a sequel. Fingers crossed the funny bits land, and the scary bits are terrifying enough to make you sleep with one eye open.
As always, feel free to ask questions in the comments or drop me a message!
Have a great weekend (and don’t do anything Grace and Tiffany wouldn’t do)!
Thanks Mica, I'll add both to my list!
I watched The Omen yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it, will post the review next week.
I saw the Amityville remake in the cinema and remember it being terrifying! Perhaps a rewatch is overdue 😱
The Omen is a classic! If you like 70s style horror, I recommend The Fog. I can’t help myself but watch it every year on October 1st to kick off Halloween month! Amityville Horror is my next fav, both the original and the remake. (I lean towards the remake. Ryan Reynolds did a phenomenal job!)
